Description

Knock down mites, aphids and thrips and still pick the same day

OrganiShield is a sucrose octanoate ester concentrate, EPA registered as 94424-1 and OMRI Listed for use in organic production. It kills on contact by de-waxing the cuticle of the pest so the insect or mite dries out, which is a physical mechanism rather than a nerve poison. The label clears foliar use up to and including the day of harvest, and EPA granted an exemption from residue tolerance requirements on all food commodities. It mixes at 1 to 1.3 fluid ounces per gallon of water.

Against a conventional contact spray
Conventional contact sprays
  • Work through the pest's chemistry, as a neurotoxin or an oil
  • Repeat use selects for the individuals that tolerate the active
  • Pre-harvest intervals are usually counted in days or weeks
  • Horticultural oils emulsify and sit on the leaf surface
  • Food-crop residues generally need an established tolerance
  • Labels commonly carry honey bee precautions and timing limits
OrganiShield
  • De-waxes the cuticle so the pest desiccates, a physical mechanism
  • EPA found resistance builds up less than with conventional pesticides
  • Label permits application up to and including the day of harvest
  • Dissolves readily in water and sprays as a solution, not an emulsion
  • Exempt from residue tolerance requirements on all food commodities
  • EPA rates it practically non-toxic to honey bees
A physical kill, not a chemical one

It dries the pest out rather than poisoning it Contact kill

EPA describes the mode of action as de-waxing the cuticle of the target pest, which leads to desiccation. The label covers adelgids, aphids, caterpillars, glassy-winged sharpshooter, lace bugs, leafhoppers, mealybugs, mites, plant bugs, psyllids, soft scales, tent caterpillars, thrips and whiteflies.

Resistance has little to grab onto

Because the kill is mechanical, EPA concluded that pest resistance builds up less than it does with conventional pesticides.

Spray the morning you harvest 0 day PHI

Foliar applications may be made up to and including the day of harvest. The 48 hour restricted entry interval still governs when people go back into the treated area.

Gone in about five days 5 days

EPA puts biodegradation at roughly five days, breaking down into sucrose, fatty acids, carbon dioxide and water.

Cleared for food crops and organic production

Residues are exempt from tolerance requirements on all food commodities when the product is used according to the label, and it carries an OMRI listing for organic growers.

The same label covers a use on honey bee hives

Alongside the foliar directions, the label carries a varroa mite treatment applied directly to hive frames, which is an unusual thing for a registered miticide to allow.

How a spray day actually goes

1

Mix it

1 to 1.3 fluid ounces per gallon of water. Do not let the final spray mixture drop below pH 7.0.

2

Keep it moving

It dissolves readily in water, but the label asks for gentle agitation right through the application so the mix stays in suspension.

3

Wet everything

The label calls thorough coverage including the undersides of leaves essential. This is a contact product, so a pest you miss is a pest that lives.

4

Come back in a week

Repeat at 7 to 10 day intervals as needed. For heavy pressure the label says to move to the 1.0 percent end of the range, not to spray more often.

What arrives and what you supply
In the box, and on your shelf
  • OrganiShield concentrate in the size you select
  • The EPA registered label with full directions for use
  • You supply a sprayer and clean water
  • You supply long sleeves, long pants, shoes and socks
  • You supply protective eyewear
  • You supply a NIOSH approved dust and mist filtering respirator
Sizes we stock, and what each one mixes
  • 2.5 oz Starter: about 2 to 2.5 gallons of finished spray
  • 16 oz Small: about 12 to 16 gallons
  • 32 oz Medium: about 25 to 32 gallons
  • 1 Gallon Large: about 100 to 128 gallons
  • Commercial size: call us for volume pricing and freight
Which size should you buy? The label tells you to treat a few plants at the label rate first and watch for a phytotoxic response, so the 2.5 oz starter exists to do exactly that before you commit to a bigger bottle. A single 2x4 tent pass is usually under a gallon of finished spray, which makes 16 oz a season's worth for most tent growers. Call 716-217-0353 or email help@happyhydro.com.
Frequently asked questions
The label does not promise it will not, and it tells you how to find out: treat a few plants at the label rate and watch for a phytotoxic response before you spray everything. Do that on whatever you are growing, because sensitivity varies by species and by how stressed the plant already is.
The label requires a long sleeved shirt and long pants, shoes plus socks, protective eyewear, and a NIOSH approved dust and mist filtering respirator. The restricted entry interval is 48 hours. Early entry before that is covered by its own PPE list that adds coveralls and waterproof gloves.
Run a jar compatibility test first with the same proportions of product and water you plan to spray. Two things to watch: keep the final mixture at pH 7.0 or above, and test again if your water runs harder than 300 ppm. Spray promptly once mixed rather than letting a tank sit.
No. EPA describes it as primarily a contact insecticide and miticide with limited residual activity. Anything the spray does not physically land on survives, which is why coverage matters more here than with a systemic product, and why the 7 to 10 day repeat exists to catch the next hatch.
The label covers greenhouse and outdoor vegetables, herbs and spices, fruit and nut crops, field crops, hops, coffee, banana, pineapple, ornamentals, Christmas trees, roses, flowers and bedding plants, plus mushroom growing media. State rules can be narrower than the federal label, so check yours if you are growing commercially.
EPA rates sucrose octanoate esters practically non-toxic to honey bees and concluded toxic effects on non-target insects are unlikely when the product is used as directed. That said, the kill is physical, so a beneficial insect that takes a direct hit of wet spray is still at risk. Spray when your beneficials are least exposed.
