The Photontek X 600W PRO 3.1 puts Samsung LM301H EVO and Osram 4.24 diodes into a six-bar aluminum frame that covers a 5x5 ft canopy at 120 degrees of spread. It draws 640 watts, outputs 1,990 µmol/s of photosynthetically active light, and dims from 100% down to off without losing efficiency at any point in the range. Two diode families, one full spectrum: how the 3.1 makes light

The X 600W PRO 3.1 combines two types of LEDs on every bar. Samsung LM301H EVO white diodes produce a broad-spectrum base covering blue, green, and red wavelengths. They are Samsung's latest top-bin horticultural diode, selected for the highest photon output per watt in each production run. Osram 4.24 deep-red diodes supplement the spectrum with a concentrated peak around 660nm, which is the wavelength most efficiently absorbed by chlorophyll during flowering and fruit set.

The two diode types are mixed across all six bars so every square inch of canopy receives the same ratio of wavelengths. Each bar runs at roughly 100 watts, keeping junction temperatures low, which extends diode life and maintains output. A clear glue protection layer covers every diode with 99% light transmittance (vs. 95 to 97% for traditional conformal coatings), while also sealing the bars to IP65 against moisture and dust.

The jump from the 2.7 version (1,620 µmol/s) to the 3.1 (1,990 µmol/s) comes entirely from newer diodes and an improved driver, not a larger fixture. That 370 extra µmol/s is enough to push a 4x4 coverage area out to a true 5x5 without light-starving the edges.

Magnetic snap-in bars: run 1, 3, or all 6 Hot-swappable

Each 100W bar clicks into the frame with magnets and quick-release connectors. No wiring, no screws. You can remove or add bars without powering down the fixture, so you can scale light coverage as your canopy fills out.

Detachable driver moves heat outside your grow space

The driver generates the fixture's thermal load. Detaching it and mounting it outside the tent or room drops the in-canopy BTU output from 2,201 to 2,047 BTUs/h. In a sealed tent, that difference can save you a degree or two at the canopy.

0-10V universal control, daisy chain up to 100 fixtures

The included 5-step dimmer handles most home grows. For automated scheduling, sunrise/sunset ramping, and 1% dimming increments, the optional Photontek Digital Controller connects via 0-10V and manages up to 100 fixtures. Any third-party 0-10V controller also works, and an RJ-to-0-10V adapter is available for systems with RJ ports.

Full cycle spectrum with no bulb swaps or channel switching

The fixed spectrum is weighted heavily toward red, which drives strong flower response, while retaining enough blue for compact, healthy vegetative growth. There is no UV or far-red on the fixture itself. Photontek sells a 50W far-red supplemental bar separately for growers who want Emerson enhancement effect coverage.

Snap the frame together

The aluminum frame connects with quick-release fittings. No tools or hardware needed. Most growers have the frame locked rigid in under a minute.

Click in the LED bars

Each bar hooks into one side and magnets to the other, making the electrical connection automatically. Start with fewer bars for seedlings, add more as the canopy expands.

Mount the driver and plug in

The driver sits on top of the frame by default, but it detaches so you can mount it outside the tent to move heat out of the canopy. Both 120V (NEMA 5-15P) and 240V (NEMA 6-15P) power cables are included.

Frequently asked questions

Will this light work in a 4x4 tent, or do I really need a 5x5?

It works in both. In a 4x4, you'll have more than enough intensity at full power, so you'll likely run it dimmed to 60 to 80% for most of the cycle. That gives you headroom and saves a little on the electric bill. In a 5x5, you can run it closer to 100% and still get good edge coverage thanks to the 120-degree spread. If your tent is a 4x4 and you want to save money, the X 600W PRO (2.7) is also a strong option for that size space.

What's the actual difference between the 2.7, 2.9, and 3.1 versions?

All three share the same physical frame and six-bar layout. The difference is diodes and driver efficiency. The original 2.7 uses Osram and Lumileds diodes and produces 1,620 µmol/s. The 2.9 upgraded to newer Osram and Lumileds bins for 1,770 µmol/s. The 3.1 moves to Samsung LM301H EVO and Osram 4.24 diodes for 1,990 µmol/s. That is a 23% total increase from the 2.7 to the 3.1, with only about 40 extra watts of draw. If you already own the 2.7, the 3.1 bars are not cross-compatible since they use a different driver.

Can I start with fewer bars and add more later?

Yes. The fixture operates with any number of bars from 1 to 6. Some growers run 2 bars for seedlings, 4 for early veg, then all 6 for flower. The remaining bars still draw no power when removed. You can also swap a bar out while the fixture is on if one needs cleaning or replacement, and the rest of the fixture continues running normally.

Do I need the Photontek Digital Controller, or is the included dimmer enough?

For a single tent or room, the included 5-step dimmer (off, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) handles most situations fine. The Digital Controller adds value if you want automated light schedules, sunrise/sunset ramping to reduce plant stress, temperature safety shutoff, or finer 1% dimming increments. It is also useful if you run multiple fixtures, since one controller manages up to 100 units. If you're using a third-party environmental controller with 0-10V output, you can skip the Photontek controller entirely and plug straight in.

How high should I hang it, and what intensity should I run at each stage?

The manual includes a PPFD chart with recommended heights and dimmer percentages for each growth stage. Follow that chart as your starting point. A PAR meter or a phone app like Photone will help you fine-tune from there. The most common beginner mistake with this light is running too much intensity too early, so start conservative and increase gradually while watching for leaf curl or bleaching.

Does this light run hot? What kind of ventilation do I need?

At 640 watts, the fixture generates about 2,201 BTUs per hour with the driver attached. In a standard 5x5 tent with a 6-inch inline fan and carbon filter, most growers manage temperatures without issues. If you're in a warm environment or a sealed room, detaching the driver and mounting it outside the tent drops the in-tent heat to roughly 2,047 BTUs per hour. That 150 BTU difference can save you a degree or two at the canopy in smaller spaces.
