Most crops do well at 65 to 68°F.
Covered reservoirs pick up the least outside heat.
Check the pump label. Most reservoir pumps run 15 to 60 watts.

Why this matters
What actually heats a reservoir

A chiller isn't sized off gallons alone. It has to remove heat as fast as heat gets added. Four things add heat to a reservoir, and they stack.

Submerged equipment
Every watt a pump or air stone pulls turns into heat in the water. A 25-watt pump runs 24/7, so it adds heat around the clock.
Room and tent air temp
An uninsulated tote sitting in a 78°F tent constantly picks up heat through its walls. Wrapping it slows that transfer a lot.
Light exposed to the reservoir
Open DWC buckets or uncovered totes under a fixture pick up radiant heat directly. Covering the reservoir removes this load entirely.
How fast you want to drop
Bringing 50 gallons down 10°F overnight takes more capacity than doing it over three days. Faster targets need bigger chillers.

Why growers target 65 to 68°F

Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen, and roots that are starved for oxygen absorb nutrients poorly no matter how dialed in your feed schedule is. Water sitting above 75 to 78°F for extended periods is also the range where pythium and other root pathogens thrive. Below 60°F, nutrient uptake slows down instead. The 65 to 68°F band is the balance point most crops handle well.

Chiller sizing FAQ

Most crops tolerate up to 72 to 74°F without issue. If your reservoir consistently runs hotter than that, or you're seeing slow growth and root problems you can't otherwise explain, a chiller is worth adding.

Not really. An oversized chiller short-cycles, turning on and off more than it should, which wears the compressor faster and doesn't hold temperature any tighter. Matching the load is the goal, not maxing it out.

Yes. Growers in cold rooms or with wide day and night swings often run both on a dual-stage controller so the reservoir holds a tight range in either direction.

Yes, noticeably. In the estimate above, insulation cuts the ambient heat gain roughly in half, which is often enough to drop you a full chiller size and save real money up front.
