    Description

Keep the roots in the pot and out of the AQUAvalve

A PotSock is a stitched root control cover that goes over the base of the pot before you fill it, copper face against the pot. AutoPot supplies root control with every system and module and rates the material for a couple of grow cycles, which makes these the refills. Four sizes cover the 2.2 and 3.9 gallon pots, the 3 and 5 gallon GeoPots and the 6.6 gallon XL pot, and the 9 and 13 gallon fabric pots. The size is decided by the pot you already own, not by the plant in it.

A bare pot base vs a PotSock

What changes when there is a barrier between the pot and the tray

Nothing fitted to the base of the pot PotSock fitted to the base
Roots follow the water straight out of the pot and into the tray underneath it. AutoPot designed the PotSock to keep even the most agile root system contained in the pot.
Roots that reach the tray reach the AQUAvalve sitting in it. AutoPot states that containing the roots is what lets the AQUAvalve in your module tray operate without interference.
The only barrier is whatever disc came in the tray or inside the pot. A second barrier on the outside of the pot, fitted over the base before the medium goes in.
A long-term crop or an aggressive root system gets the whole run to find a way out. AutoPot recommends PotSocks specifically for long-term crops and plants with aggressive root systems.
Roots in the tray come out by hand, and they are back the next cycle. A couple of grow cycles from the material, and AutoPot says it still works after the surface copper oxidizes off because copper is woven through the fabric.
You find out there is a root problem when the valve stops behaving. AutoPot asks you to inspect the socks, trays and valves and pull escaping roots before they establish, so it shows up early.

    Before you order

Six things worth knowing before you pick a size

    Read this first4 sizes

Two of these say 9 gallon and they are not interchangeable

The PotSock for 9 gal FlexiPot fits only the older fabric FlexiPot, the one with the adaptive collar. Current 9 and 13 gallon GeoPot G Lite pots take the PotSock XXL.

    Copper woven through

The copper is in the fabric, not only on it

AutoPot coats the surface and weaves copper through the material, so a sock whose coating has oxidized off is still a working sock rather than a worn one.

    AQUAvalve

The valve is the thing being protected

AutoPot's stated reason is the valve, not the pot. Roots that get into the tray interfere with how the AQUAvalve opens and closes, which is what feeds every pot on the line.

    Not root proof

AutoPot does not claim it stops everything

Its own wording is that aggressive roots can still penetrate the material or the stitching over time, which is why inspection stays part of maintenance.

    A couple of cycles

This is a consumable, and your system came with one

All AutoPot systems and modules ship with root control included. AutoPot rates the material for a couple of grow cycles, so these pages exist for the replacement.

    Two layers

The published answer to a monster root system

AutoPot puts a root control disc inside the pot gold face down and the sock on the base gold face up, and says you can double up on socks for the worst of them.

Four things AutoPot does not publish, so they are not on this page. It gives pack dimensions rather than fitted dimensions, and lists both XXL socks at an identical 5 by 5 by 5 inches, which is a carton and not a sock, so no fitted measurements are quoted here. It does not name the base fabric beyond calling it root control material, does not state how much copper is in it, and gives no washing instructions. Placement for every module is in the AutoPot Growers Guide on AutoPot's own site. Call 716-217-0353 if you need a measurement confirmed before you order and we will put a tape on one in Buffalo.

    How it works

Four steps from the right size to a tray you are not weeding

    1

Match the sock to the pot, not the plant

Square for 2.2 and 3.9 gallon pots, Round for 3 and 5 gallon GeoPots and the 6.6 gallon XL pot, XXL for 9 and 13 gallon GeoPot G Lite.

    2

Fit it over the base before you fill

AutoPot's GeoPot instructions put fitting the PotSock over the base ahead of filling with medium. Gold face up, which is the copper side against the pot.

    3

Add the inside layer for aggressive plants

AutoPot's guide pairs a root control disc inside the pot, gold face down, with the sock on the base. easy2grow modules get both as standard.

    4

Check it when you check the valve

Inspect the socks, trays and AQUAvalves on your normal rounds and pull any escaping roots before they establish in the tray.

Buying tip: the sock is only the outside layer, and AutoPot's answer for aggressive roots is both layers at once. The discs that go inside the pot are our AutoPot Root Control Sheets, in squares for the 2.2 and 3.9 gallon pots and rounds for the 3, 5 and 6.6 gallon pots. If the pots or the trays under them are also at the end of their life, those are the Replacement Pots and Replacement Trays pages. Not sure which pot you have? Call 716-217-0353 with your order number and we will look it up.
    FAQ

What growers ask before buying a replacement PotSock

Because it wears out and the system does not. AutoPot supplies root control with every system and module, in some combination of PotSock and root control disc depending on which module you bought. It rates the material for a couple of grow cycles, so this page is where you come back when the original has done its time.

We cannot promise it. AutoPot sizes these to its own pots and names the fit by pot rather than by inches, and the only dimensions it publishes are pack sizes. If you want to try one on another brand's pot, call 716-217-0353 with the base diameter of your pot and we will measure a sock here before you order rather than after.

Look for the adaptive collar. AutoPot describes the 9 gal FlexiPot as the older fabric pot used in the XXL System with that collar, and it is the only pot the FlexiPot sock is for. The XXL System now ships with GeoPot G Lite fabric pots in 9 and 13 gallon, and both of those take the PotSock XXL. If you bought the system from us, call 716-217-0353 and we will check the order.

There is, and we do not stock it today. AutoPot makes a Drawstring PotSock for the 3 and 5 gallon fabric GeoPot with a higher wall, a drawstring and no stitched seams. It is not one of the four sizes on this page. Call 716-217-0353 and we will tell you what we can get and when.

AutoPot publishes no washing or care instructions for them, so we are not going to invent a method. What it does say is that the copper coating oxidizing off does not finish the sock, because copper is woven through the fabric as well, and that the material is good for a couple of grow cycles.

No, and the guide is specific about it. AutoPot lists a root control disc in the tray for 1Pot and a disc in the pot for 1Pot XL, with no sock on either. The sock on the base of the pot is listed for easy2grow, GeoPot and XXL. The exception is an aggressive plant, where AutoPot adds a sock to the base whatever the module.
