Gaia Green Super Fly is pure insect frass, the castings black soldier fly larvae leave behind after being raised on pre-consumer grains and food. Along with a gentle 3-1-2 feed, it is one of the only amendments that delivers chitin, the same material that builds insect shells and fungal cell walls. Plants read that chitin as a signal to prepare their own defenses, so Super Fly feeds the soil, feeds the plant, and puts it on alert.

Why it's different
A standard dry fertilizer vs. Gaia Green Super Fly
Standard Dry Fertilizer
Feeds the plant and does nothing else
No chitin, so no defense-priming signal
Often fast-releasing and easy to overdo
Adds nutrients but no living biology
Usually mined or synthesized inputs
Little effect on the soil itself
Gaia Green Super Fly
A balanced 3-1-2 feed and a biostimulant in one bag
Rich in chitin, the signal plants link to pest and fungal pressure
Slow, easily released nutrients that are forgiving to apply
Carries beneficial microbes and fungi
Upcycled from pre-consumer food waste, fully renewable
Builds soil biology as it breaks down
What makes frass different: it's the chitin
Frass is insect manure. Because black soldier fly larvae constantly shed and process exoskeleton material as they grow, their frass is unusually rich in chitin, the tough compound that builds insect shells and the cell walls of many fungi. Almost no other amendment brings a meaningful dose of it to the root zone.
That chitin is the whole point. Plants have learned to treat it as an early warning: when they sense chitin around their roots, they read it as insects or fungi moving in and begin preparing their own defense chemistry before any real attack lands. Chitin also feeds the soil microbes that produce chitinase, the enzyme that digests exoskeletons and fungal walls. Gaia Green sells Super Fly as a biostimulant for this reason. It is less about the raw NPK and more about the signal it sends the plant.
What makes it different
Part fertilizer, part biostimulant, part soil food
Chitin that primes plant defenses Biostimulant
The standout ingredient, and what sets frass apart from every other dry amendment. As roots take up the chitin signal, the plant ramps up the natural defense responses it would use against real insect or fungal pressure.
A real balanced feed 3-1-2
Unlike a pure inoculant, Super Fly is also an organic fertilizer with nitrogen, phosphate, and potash. It supports growth across the whole cycle while the biology goes to work.
Living microbes and fungi
The frass arrives carrying beneficial bacteria and fungi that settle into the root zone and help turn the amendment, and the rest of your soil, into food roots can use.
Slow, easily released nutrients
The nitrogen splits roughly one part water-soluble to two parts water-insoluble, so a little feeds right away and the rest releases as microbes break it down. That makes it forgiving to apply.
Upcycled and renewable
The larvae are raised on pre-consumer grains and food, so the frass is a byproduct rather than something mined or manufactured. About as low-impact as a fertilizer gets.
Built to pair with worm castings
Gaia Green designed the two to work together: Worm Castings bring the microbial inoculant and organic matter, and Super Fly adds chitin, phosphate, and potash on top.

Outdoor and turf rates
Gardens and landscapes: broadcast and work in up to 1 kg per 2.5 square meters, about 2.2 lbs per 25 sq ft, up to a maximum of 4 kg per 2.5 square meters per year. Turf: broadcast up to 2.8 kg per 25 square meters, about 23 lbs per 1000 sq ft, then water in. Container and top-dress rates are in the usage steps just below.
Four ways to use it
1
Pre-mix into fresh soil
Blend 3 tablespoons per gallon, about 45 ml per 4 L, into potting mix or bagged soil at fill. Good for pots, planter boxes, and hanging baskets.
2
Top-dress through the grow
Scatter a light layer on the soil surface, scratch it into the top half-inch, and water it in. Reapply every few weeks while plants are actively growing.
3
Charge the soil early
Because most of the nitrogen is water-insoluble and releases slowly, work it in a week or two before planting so the microbes have a head start.
4
Brew a frass tea
Steep a few scoops in water and use it as a root drench. A quick way to carry the chitin and microbes through a whole tray or room of plants.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
It's a biostimulant, not a pesticide, so don't expect it to clear an active infestation. What the chitin does is prime the plant's own defenses so it's better prepared for pressure, which is a plant-health and prevention play rather than a rescue spray. If you already have bugs, treat those directly and use Super Fly to keep plants resilient going forward.
For light and moderate feeders, the 3-1-2 can carry them on its own with regular top-dressing. Heavy feeders in full flower want more phosphorus and potassium than a 3-1-2 provides, so most growers run Super Fly as part of a program and lean on Power Bloom 2-8-4 once flowering ramps up. Not sure which camp your plants are in? Call us and we'll help you sort it out.
They overlap on biology but do different jobs. Worm Castings are mostly a microbial inoculant with organic matter and a little nitrogen, so they condition the soil. Super Fly adds the chitin signal plus available phosphate and potash on top of its microbes, so it does more feeding and more defense priming. Gaia Green designed them to be used together, not as either-or.
No flies. It's dried, finished frass, not live larvae, so there's nothing in the bag that can hatch. The smell is mild and earthy, closer to soil than to manure. As with any organic amendment, keep the top of the soil from staying soggy and you won't invite fungus gnats.
Soil and coco are the easy fit, in containers or beds. It's a dry amendment, so don't dump it straight into a recirculating hydro reservoir where it would settle and clog lines. If you run hydro and still want the chitin and microbes, brew a frass tea and dose that instead.
Because it releases slowly, you don't need to feed it constantly. Pre-mixing at fill sets you up for a while, and a light top-dress every few weeks keeps fresh chitin and nutrients cycling through the root zone during active growth. Ease off as plants finish and stop taking up much.
