Description

Put living biology back into your soil

Gaia Green Worm Castings are pure vermicompost from African nightcrawlers, the rich, dark castings earthworms leave behind as they digest peat moss and organic grains. Every bag carries living microbes and organic matter, the two things a bottle of nutrients can't give your soil. Worm castings feed the microbes, the microbes feed the soil, and the soil feeds your plants.

Bagged compost and raw manure vs. Gaia Green Worm Castings
Bagged Compost or Raw Manure
  • Quality swings from bag to bag depending on the feedstock
  • Raw or hot manure can burn roots and needs curing first
  • Shelf-stable, bagged amendments are often microbially dead
  • Under-composted material can carry weed seeds or pathogens
  • Heavy composts compact and choke root-zone drainage
  • Organic status is often unclear or uncertified
Gaia Green Worm Castings
  • Nightcrawlers raised on a set diet, so every bag matches the last
  • Gentle 2-0-0 that won't burn seedlings, transplants, or roots
  • Ships as living vermicompost, ready to inoculate the root zone
  • Pure castings, no raw manure and no weed seeds
  • High organic matter that improves aeration, drainage, and water holding
  • OMRI Listed for certified organic growing

Why worm castings work: it's the biology, not the NPK

The 2-0-0 label makes worm castings look weak next to a bag of 4-4-4. But that number only counts the small amount of nitrogen the castings release on their own. It completely misses the actual job: castings are a concentrated dose of the microbes and organic matter earthworms produce as they digest their food.

Those microbes are what unlock nutrition. They break down the amendments already in your soil, hold nutrients in the root zone instead of letting them wash out the bottom of the pot, and feed the fungi and bacteria that plants trade sugars with underground. Worm castings don't feed the plant so much as they wake up the soil, which is why growers layer them in alongside a dry-amendment program rather than instead of one.

A soil conditioner and microbial booster in one bag

A living microbial inoculant OMRI Listed

Each bag is packed with the beneficial bacteria and fungi earthworms produce. Worked into your mix, they colonize the root zone and go to work converting organic matter into food roots can actually take up.

Impossible to burn 2-0-0

With effectively no salt load, there is no hot-spot risk. Mix it into seed trays, transplant holes, and houseplant pots without worrying about scorching tender roots.

Consistent every bag

The nightcrawlers are raised on a set diet of peat moss and organic grains, so what you buy this season matches what you bought last season. No mystery compost.

Fixes soil structure

The organic matter behaves like a sponge in the root zone, holding moisture while still letting excess water drain. It loosens heavy mixes and gives light, sandy ones something to grip.

Makes your amendments work harder

Paired with a top-dress of Gaia Green All Purpose 4-4-4 or Power Bloom 2-8-4, the biology breaks those amendments down and releases them on the plant's schedule instead of all at once.

A natural, renewable input

Castings are simply what earthworms produce, not something mined or manufactured in a plant. That makes them one of the lowest-impact ways to enrich a soil mix.

Outdoor and lawn rates

Garden and landscape: mix in 2 L per square meter, about a half gallon per 10 sq ft, once a month. Lawn: apply up to 2.8 kg per 10 square meters per year. Container blend and top-dress rates are in the usage steps just below.

Four ways to use it

1

Blend into a fresh mix

Mix 5 to 10% castings by volume into a new batch of soil or potting mix at fill. The biology and organic matter are in place from day one.

2

Add at transplant

Work a scoop into the planting hole and backfill. Because it can't burn, seedlings and fresh clones go straight in with no shock.

3

Top-dress living plants

Sprinkle about 3 tablespoons per gallon of soil on the surface each month, scratch it into the top half-inch, and water it in.

4

Brew a casting tea

Steep a few scoops in water, ideally with an air stone, to multiply the microbes, then pour it into the root zone as a living drench.

Frequently asked questions
No, and that's by design. At 2-0-0 castings are a soil and microbial booster, not a complete feed, so most plants still want a real nutrient source alongside them. The castings make that nutrient source go further by keeping the soil biology active and holding what you feed in the root zone. If you want a full organic program, run them with All Purpose 4-4-4 in veg and Power Bloom 2-8-4 in flower.
The usage steps above cover the common cases, from blending a fresh mix to a monthly top-dress. You really can't overdo it: there's no salt load to burn anything, so extra castings just add more organic matter. Past a certain point you're spending money on soil conditioning rather than nutrition, which is why most growers stick near the listed amounts.
The castings themselves are clean, finished vermicompost, not raw manure, so they don't arrive carrying pests. Fungus gnats are a moisture problem, not a castings problem: they show up when the top layer of any soil stays wet too long. Let the surface dry between waterings and you'll keep them away.
Soil and coco are the natural fit, whether in containers or beds. It's a solid amendment, so don't drop it straight into a recirculating hydro reservoir where it would clog things up. If you run hydro and still want the microbes, brew the castings into a tea and use that as a drench instead.
Yes, and it's one of the best uses. When you recharge old soil with dry amendments after a harvest, add a scoop of castings per gallon at the same time. The fresh biology speeds up the breakdown of the amendments and brings tired soil back to life. Our Soil Re-Amend Kit bundles castings with everything else you need for that.
The biology is hardy, so there's no hard expiration date, but treat it like a living product. Store the bag sealed, cool, and out of direct sun, and keep the castings slightly moist. What kills the microbes is letting the bag fully dry out or baking in a hot shed all summer, so avoid that and it will keep for a long time.
