How Stash Base builds veg and the medium

A strong vegetative stage starts with the medium, not just the feed. Stash Base uses biochar and glacial and volcanic rock dusts to do the structural work. The biochar acts like a sponge and a reef at once, holding water and nutrients and giving soil microbes a place to live, while the rock dusts slowly release the wide range of trace minerals plants draw on across a full cycle.

On top of that structure, marine, fish, and plant inputs supply the nitrogen, phosphorus, and calcium that leaf, stem, and root growth need. Because that nitrogen is mostly slow-release and water-insoluble, it feeds gradually as soil biology mineralizes it, which keeps vegetative growth steady and makes it hard to burn young plants. You end up with a medium that is fed and alive before the plant even asks for it.

What's in the bag

Ingredients: calcium phosphate, biochar, crustacean meal, feather meal, fishbone meal, glacial and volcanic rock dusts, alfalfa, insect frass, giant kelp meal, neem seed kernel meal, oyster shell dust, sulfate of potash, calcium carbonate, and fish meal. Because it includes fish, crustacean, and feather meals, Stash Base is not vegan, and it carries the earthy smell natural amendments tend to have.

How to feed with Stash Base

Amend fresh or reused media

Mix Stash Base into your soil or coco at about 2.5 tablespoons per gallon of media before planting. If you can, let it sit and moisten for a few days so it starts breaking down.

Start seedlings gently

Rather than seeding straight into freshly amended soil, dig a small hole and start seeds or young plants in a mild seed-starting mix, then let the roots reach the amended soil as they grow. This keeps tender seedlings from burning.

Feed through veg

As plants establish, top-dress the veg rate of 3 to 4 tablespoons per gallon of media every two to three weeks, lightly work it into the surface, and water as normal.

Switch to Bloom at the flip

When plants move into flower, stop feeding Base and transition to Stash Bloom for the flowering stage. The amended soil stays productive underneath.

Before you buy

Is this my only veg feed, or do I still need liquid nutrients?

For most soil and coco grows, it is enough on its own through veg. Stash Base supplies nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and a broad set of trace minerals, so you can amend and grow without a separate grow bottle. If you like a specific liquid line, you can still run it, since Stash is compatible with organic and synthetic nutrients.

Will it work in coco, or only soil?

It works in soil, living soil, and coco. In coco, use a lighter up-front mix and lean more on top-dressing as plants grow, since coco holds fewer nutrients than soil. It is not made for deep water culture or other pure-hydro reservoirs, because it is a dry amendment that releases as it breaks down.

Can I plant seedlings straight into freshly amended soil?

Go easy at the start. Freshly amended soil can be strong for tender seedlings, so start them in a mild seed-starting mix and transplant into the amended soil once they have a few sets of roots, or use the lighter young-plant rate when you mix. Established plants handle the full rate fine.

How much do I need for my garden?

It is measured per gallon of media, so your total depends on container count and how much soil you are building. As a rough guide, a tablespoon of dry amendment is about 10 grams, so a 5-gallon pot amended at the mix rate uses a little under a cup. For an exact number for your setup, call us and we will work it out with you.

Is it organic, and can I use it in a living-soil bed?

Every input is natural, and it is a strong fit for living-soil and no-till beds, where it amends and remineralizes the bed between runs. We do not claim a specific certification on this page, so if you need a certified input for a particular program, call us first and we will confirm the current label with you before you order.

Does it smell, and will it draw pests indoors?

It has the earthy, mealy smell natural dry amendments carry, strongest right after you water it in. Mixing it into the soil rather than leaving it on the surface keeps the smell down and keeps it from drawing fungus gnats or other surface pests.

What if it arrives damaged, or I change my mind?
