Description

Put the minerals back that every grow takes out

Gaia Green Basalt Rock Dust is finely ground volcanic rock, mined from an ancient deposit in British Columbia and rich in the silica, iron, magnesium, and calcium that soil loses over time. It isn't a fertilizer with an NPK number. It's the mineral foundation underneath one, slowly weathering into the trace elements that plants and soil microbes both rely on. It won't burn, it won't wash out, and one application keeps working for seasons.

Feeding NPK alone vs. adding Gaia Green Basalt Rock Dust
Feeding NPK Alone
  • Replaces the big three, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and little else
  • Trace minerals keep depleting grow after grow
  • No silica for the plant to build into its tissue
  • Salt-based feeds can build up and need flushing
  • Fast-release, so you re-buy and re-apply constantly
  • Does little for long-term soil health
Basalt Rock Dust
  • Adds a broad spectrum of minerals and trace elements
  • Re-mineralizes depleted soil the way fresh volcanic sediment does
  • A natural source of silica plants build into their cell walls
  • Inert rock, no salt load and nothing to flush
  • Slow-release, so one application feeds for seasons
  • Supports soil biology and builds long-term fertility

Why rock dust matters: your soil is a mineral bank you keep withdrawing from

Every harvest carries minerals out of your soil for good. Plants pull silica, iron, magnesium, calcium, and dozens of trace elements out of the root zone and lock them into the leaves, stems, and fruit you cut and remove. Bottled nutrients and dry NPK amendments top up nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, but they were never meant to replace the full mineral spectrum that rock provides.

In nature, geology refills that bank. Volcanic ash, glacial grinding, and eroding bedrock constantly seed soil with fresh minerals. Basalt rock dust does the same job out of a bag. Because it's ground fine, soil acids and microbes can weather it steadily, releasing minerals on a slow schedule rather than in a salt spike. Gaia Green calls it a remineralizer for that reason: it rebuilds what your plants keep drawing down, instead of feeding them for a single cycle.

The mineral layer under a healthy organic soil

A full spectrum of rock minerals OMRI Listed

One amendment covering silica, iron, magnesium, calcium, and a wide range of trace elements, the minerals that macro fertilizers leave out and that a little more of every grow removes.

A natural source of silica

Plants take up silica and build it into their cell walls and tissue. Basalt is one of the simplest organic ways to keep that supply topped up in your mix.

Slow-release by nature

It's solid rock, so nothing dumps at once. Soil acids and microbes weather the fine dust gradually, which is why a single mix-in keeps releasing minerals across more than one grow.

Impossible to burn

There's no salt or NPK load to scorch roots, so you can work it into seed starts, transplants, and established pots without any burn risk.

Supports soil biology

The mineral surfaces and trace elements give the bacteria and fungi in your root zone more to work with, part of why remineralized soil tends to stay productive longer.

Built for reused and no-till soil

If you recharge old soil with amendments like All Purpose 4-4-4 or Worm Castings, basalt is the mineral half of that reset, replacing what the last crop hauled off.

Outdoor and turf rates

Gardens and landscapes: broadcast and work in up to 3 kg per 10 square meters, about 6 lbs per 100 sq ft, up to a maximum of 12 kg per 10 square meters, about 24 lbs per 100 sq ft, per year. Container and top-dress rates are in the usage steps just below.

Four ways to use it

1

Pre-mix into fresh soil

Blend 1 tablespoon per gallon, about 15 ml per 4 L, into potting mix or bagged soil and mix it in thoroughly before planting.

2

Top-dress established pots

Use the same one-tablespoon-per-gallon rate, gently dug into the soil surface about once a month, then watered in.

3

Broadcast over beds and turf

For gardens, landscapes, and lawns, spread and work it in at the outdoor rates listed in the specs above.

4

Water in and give it time

Rock dust works slowly. The minerals release as soil weathers the dust over weeks and months, so treat it as a long-term soil investment, not an instant feed.

Frequently asked questions
It depends on how you grow. Basalt is a slow, long-game remineralizer, not a quick feed, so you won't see an overnight jump. Where it earns its place is in reused, living, or no-till soil, where trace minerals and silica genuinely deplete over successive crops and need replacing. If you swap in fresh bagged soil every single grow, you'll notice the difference less.
Not in a way you need to plan around. Basalt sits close to pH-neutral and weathers slowly, so it won't swing your soil the way a strong lime would. In most mixes you can add it at the label rate without recalculating anything. If you're already running tight to a target pH, add it and check as usual.
The others feed the plant and the biology; basalt rebuilds the rock minerals underneath them. All Purpose 4-4-4 and Power Bloom 2-8-4 deliver NPK, Worm Castings and Super Fly bring microbes and biology, and basalt has no NPK at all. It's a remineralizer, so it complements those amendments rather than replacing any of them.
The usage steps above cover pre-mixing, top-dressing, and outdoor broadcasting. Because it releases so slowly, you don't reapply it often: mixing it in at fill sets you up for a long stretch, and a monthly top-dress is plenty if you want to keep fresh minerals cycling. There's no salt load, so getting the amount slightly high won't hurt anything.
Soil and coco are the natural fit, in containers or beds. It's a fine mineral dust that settles, so it doesn't belong loose in a recirculating hydro reservoir where it would sink and clog lines. Living-soil and no-till growers get the most out of it since the minerals have time to weather in place.
Rock doesn't expire, so there's no shelf-life to worry about. Keep the bag sealed between uses and store it cool, dry, and out of direct sun, and protect it from frost. Dry dust is easy to handle and spread; a damp, clumped bag just makes application messier.
