Description

Loosen heavy soil and feed it slow potassium

Gaia Green Greensand is glauconite, an iron potassium silicate mined from ancient ocean seabeds and ground into a fine, gritty green sand. It does two jobs most amendments can't combine, slowly releasing potassium, iron, magnesium, and manganese while it reshapes how your soil handles water. It loosens heavy clay, it helps light soil hold moisture, and it feeds without ever burning.

Plain sand or perlite vs. Gaia Green Greensand
Plain Sand or Perlite
  • Adds air pockets but no nutrition at all
  • Contributes no potassium or trace minerals
  • Perlite floats up and blows off the surface
  • Sand can pack down and worsen drainage in clay
  • Does nothing for the soil's mineral content
  • Purely physical, scatters or breaks down over time
Gaia Green Greensand
  • Conditions texture and feeds minerals in one amendment
  • A slow source of potassium, iron, magnesium, and manganese
  • Gritty glauconite holds moisture rather than shedding it
  • Loosens compacted clay without packing back down
  • Slowly rebuilds the soil's mineral content
  • Stays in the soil and keeps working season to season

Why greensand does two jobs at once

Greensand is glauconite, a mineral that formed on ancient ocean floors over millions of years. Ground up, each grain is porous and gritty, which is what lets it fix opposite problems with the same product. Mixed into heavy clay, it wedges the packed particles apart and opens up drainage. Mixed into loose, sandy soil, it acts like a sponge that holds water and nutrients in the root zone instead of letting them run through.

Then there's the chemistry. Glauconite is an iron potassium silicate, so it slowly releases potassium along with iron, magnesium, and manganese as soil weathers it. The potassium is locked in the mineral rather than dissolved as a salt, which is why greensand feeds gently over months and can't burn roots the way a soluble potash feed can. You're conditioning the soil and slowly remineralizing it in a single step.

A soil conditioner and mineral feed in one

Fixes soil texture both ways Soil conditioner

Loosens heavy, compacted clay so roots and water can move, and helps light or sandy soil hold moisture instead of draining straight through. One amendment for two opposite soil problems.

Slow-release potassium 0-0-0.2

The potassium is bound in the glauconite and released gradually as the soil weathers it, so plants get a steady trickle rather than a salt spike.

Iron, magnesium, and manganese too

Beyond potassium, greensand carries iron, magnesium, and manganese, the kind of trace minerals that quietly run down in soil you reuse grow after grow.

Gentle, won't burn

With almost no soluble salt, there's no way to scorch roots. It's safe around seedlings, transplants, and even sensitive houseplants at any reasonable amount.

Works for seasons

Because the minerals are bound in rock, one application keeps conditioning and feeding rather than washing out with the next few waterings.

Pure marine glauconite

Nothing but the mined mineral from ancient seabeds, no synthetic additives. Where Basalt Rock Dust brings volcanic silica and minerals, greensand adds potassium and the soil-loosening grit, so many growers run both.

Outdoor and turf rates

Gardens and landscapes: broadcast and lightly work in up to 400 g per square meter, about 8.2 lbs per 100 sq ft, up to once a month through the growing season. Turf: broadcast at the same rate. Container methods are in the usage steps just below.

Four ways to use it

1

Loosen heavy beds

Work greensand into compacted or clay-heavy soil to open it up for roots and water. The outdoor broadcast rate is in the specs above.

2

Help light soil hold water

Mix it into sandy or fast-draining beds and containers so moisture and nutrients stay in the root zone longer instead of running through.

3

Blend into potting mix

Because it can't burn, mix a modest amount through a new batch of soil at fill. No need to measure to the gram, it conditions and feeds as it weathers.

4

Top-dress and be patient

Scratch a thin layer into the surface of established pots or beds and water in. The minerals release over months, so treat it as a long-term soil builder.

Frequently asked questions
Mostly a conditioner, with a slow mineral feed on the side. At 0-0-0.2 it isn't a real fertilizer, so it won't cover a plant's nitrogen and phosphorus needs. Its value is the texture work and the steady trickle of potassium and trace minerals. Run it alongside a full feed like All Purpose 4-4-4 rather than in place of one.
Both are slow rock-mineral amendments, but they come at it differently. Basalt Rock Dust is volcanic and leans toward silica and a broad remineralizing profile. Greensand is marine glauconite, and its strengths are potassium plus the gritty texture that loosens clay and holds water. They complement each other, which is why plenty of growers use both in the same soil.
It helps, but think improvement over years rather than an overnight fix. Worked into clay at the broadcast rate in the specs above and repeated over a few seasons, greensand gradually opens the soil up. Because it can't burn, going a little heavy won't hurt, so you have room to be generous with badly compacted ground.
Not meaningfully. Greensand sits close to neutral and weathers slowly, so it isn't a liming agent and won't swing your pH the way lime would. In most mixes you can add it without recalculating anything. If you're holding tight to a target pH, add it and check as you normally would.
Soil, raised beds, and coco are where it shines, especially reused or living soil where the minerals have time to weather in. It's a gritty solid, so it doesn't belong loose in a recirculating hydro reservoir where it would settle out. In containers, it doubles as both a texture amendment and a slow mineral top-up.
Rock doesn't expire, so there's no shelf life to track. Keep the bag sealed between uses and store it somewhere cool and dry. Dry greensand stays loose and easy to broadcast, while a damp, clumped bag just makes it harder to spread evenly.
