Description

One rock dust, minerals from dozens of rocks

Gaia Green Glacial Rock Dust is glacial moraine, the fine powder an ice-age glacier left behind after grinding together every kind of rock in its path. That mixed origin is why it carries such a broad range of minerals and trace elements, more sources than any single rock could provide. You can't over-apply it, it won't burn, and it keeps feeding the soil long after you mix it in.

A bottled micronutrient supplement vs. Gaia Green Glacial Rock Dust
Bottled Micronutrient Mix
  • Delivers a few chelated micros in fixed ratios
  • Salt-based, so overdoing it can burn
  • Washes through and needs re-dosing every feed
  • Does nothing for the soil's ability to hold nutrients
  • Nothing you'd add to a compost pile
  • Manufactured and shipped as a liquid concentrate
Glacial Rock Dust
  • A broad mix of minerals from many rock types at once
  • Inert rock, so you can apply generously without burning
  • Slow-release, so one application lasts a long time
  • Raises cation exchange capacity so soil holds more nutrients
  • Enriches compost piles with trace elements too
  • Mined, dried, and screened glacial moraine, nothing added

Why glacial rock dust is different: many rocks, and a soil that holds more

Glacial rock dust is glacial moraine, mined in Canada. As ice-age glaciers ground their way south, they scraped up and pulverized whatever bedrock they crossed, then dropped it in deposits as they melted. That history is the point. Instead of one rock type, you get a fine powder blended from many, which is why glacial dust carries such a broad range of minerals and trace elements.

It also changes how your soil behaves. Those fine mineral particles add surface area and charge sites that raise the soil's cation exchange capacity, the measure of how well soil grabs onto positively charged nutrients like potassium, calcium, and magnesium and hands them to roots. Higher capacity means your soil holds more of what you feed it and leaches less out the bottom of the pot. You aren't just adding minerals, you're helping the soil keep them.

The broad-spectrum mineral layer for your soil

Minerals from many rocks, not one Ecocert

A glacier ground together countless kinds of bedrock as it moved, so glacial moraine carries a wider mix of minerals and trace elements than any single-source rock. One amendment, many mineral sources.

Helps soil hold more nutrients

It lifts the soil's cation exchange capacity, so the soil hangs onto more of the nutrients you add rather than letting them drain past the roots.

Magnesium, iron, and manganese

A guaranteed source of magnesium, iron, and manganese, plus a long tail of trace elements, the micro-minerals that quietly run down in soil you reuse.

Apply generously, won't burn

It's inert rock with no salt load, so there's genuinely no way to overdo it. Safe to mix in anywhere, from seed trays to established beds.

Feeds your compost too

Stirred into a compost pile, it adds trace minerals and gives the microbes more to work with, so the finished compost comes out richer.

The trace-mineral half of your program

Where All Purpose 4-4-4 handles the NPK and Worm Castings bring the biology, glacial rock dust covers the broad micro-minerals. Many growers layer all three.

Outdoor and turf rates

Gardens and landscapes: broadcast and lightly work in up to 1.2 kg per square meter, about 0.25 lbs per square foot, once a year. Turf: broadcast at the same rate and water in thoroughly. Container rates are in the usage steps just below.

Four ways to use it

1

Pre-mix into fresh soil

Blend 1 tablespoon per gallon, about 15 ml per 4 L, into potting mix or bagged soil and mix it in thoroughly before planting.

2

Top-dress established pots

Add 2 tablespoons per gallon, about 30 ml per 4 L, gently dug into the soil surface up to once a month, then water in.

3

Broadcast beds and turf

For gardens, landscapes, and lawns, spread it at the outdoor rate in the specs above, then water turf in well.

4

Boost your compost

Mix a few scoops into a compost pile as it builds. It adds trace minerals and feeds the microbes, so the finished compost comes out richer.

Frequently asked questions
All three are slow rock-mineral amendments, but each has its own strength. Glacial rock dust is a blend of many rock types, so it brings the widest spread of trace minerals and it raises the soil's ability to hold nutrients. Basalt Rock Dust is a single volcanic rock, leaning toward silica. Greensand is marine glauconite that adds potassium and loosens or holds soil texture. They complement each other, so plenty of growers use more than one.
Think of it as your soil's grip on nutrients. Cation exchange capacity is how many positively charged nutrients, like potassium, calcium, and magnesium, the soil can hold onto and release to roots on demand. Soil with a higher capacity wastes less of what you feed it, buffers swings better, and stays productive longer. The fine mineral particles in glacial rock dust are one way to nudge that number up.
Right, there's no burn risk. It's inert rock with no soluble salt, so extra just means more minerals and a bit more conditioning rather than stressed plants. That said, there's no real benefit to burying a plant in it either, so the label rates are still a sensible guide. Being a little generous is fine.
Yes. Glacial rock dust supplies minerals and trace elements, not the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium your plants need to grow and flower. Treat it as the micro-mineral layer of your soil and run it alongside a real feed like All Purpose 4-4-4, switching to Power Bloom 2-8-4 for flowering.
There's no strict rate for compost, which is part of the appeal. A few generous scoops worked through a pile as you build it is plenty. The minerals give the composting microbes more to work with and end up woven through the finished compost, so it comes out richer than it went in. Because it can't burn, you don't have to be precise.
Soil, coco, raised beds, and compost are all fair game, and reused or living soil benefits most since the minerals have time to weather in. It's a fine solid dust, so it doesn't belong loose in a recirculating hydro reservoir where it would settle and clog lines. In containers it works as both a mineral top-up and a light soil conditioner.
